Shah's Guide to SoCal
Restaurants - A Dong
(Loma Linda) - This restaurant is one of our favorites. The $6.95 lunch special is hard to beat, complete with a small cup
of soup, rice, salad and a entrée selection of your choice. Our vegetarian favorite is spicy noodles so try it!
- Buca Di Beppo (Claremont) - I love fun Italian restaurants, and this is one of our favorites. Get
ready for huge portions, tons of pictures of Old world Italy and lots of GARLIC!!! Pretty much all of their dishes have a
whopping dose of garlic in them. Our favorite is the Eggplant parmigiana and the Macaroni. And they have some great Italian
bread!
- Papa Christo's (Los Angeles) - This is Greek food at it's best. This
is a simple place that doubles as a popular Mediterranean supermarket. Pretty much all of the food on the menu (Spanakopita,
grape leaves, tzatziki) is good. The saganaki, which is supposed to be a flaming cheese, isn't too hot, mostly because it
doesn't come flaming!!
- Rahel's Market (Fairfax Ave, Los Angeles) - this is one
of the many Ethiopian restaurants we have tried in Little Ethiopia. If you haven't tried Ethiopian food you are missing out--excellent
flavors, fun eating style and awesome Injera bread! Nyala is probably the nicest looking restaurant on the strip, but this
place has the best vegetarian food. In fact, the owner told me she has the only vegetarian Ethiopian restaurant in the entire
USA! Anyway, our favorite was the Shiro and Mesir Wat.
- Surati Farsan (Artesia,
Los Angeles) - we love Indian food, and this is our pick for "fast food" type Indian food in the Little India area
of Cerritoes/Artesia in Los Angeles. The snack food here is excellent (bhel puri, sev puri, etc). It reminds me of Dimple's
in Edison.
- Tangra bistro (Artesia, Los Angeles) -- this is an Indian-Chinese
restaurant in Cerritoes and it's awesome! The owner/chef grew up in Calcutta, India and on the last page of the menu are Chinese
dishes that I've really only found in India. The Vegetarian manchurian is soooo good. The place is really nice too! *ADDENDUM
- this place closed down in 2006 *
- Jammin' Bread (Riverside) - this is one of
my favorite lunch spots. They make gourmet vegetarian sandwhiches with awesome dill sauce and delicious breads.
- Las Campanas (Riverside) - this place is in the Mission Inn. They actually have very little on the
menu for vegetarians, but the chef will make you a bean chimichanga that is awesome!! We love the outdoor seating and the
nice environment of the mission Inn
- Bombay Restaurant (Ontario) -
this is probably the most authentic Indian restaurant in the Inland Empire, and believe me, we have gone to most of them so
we should know. All the vegetarian dishes are excellent--malai kofta, paneer masala, bartha, and the naan is fresh.
- BJ's Brewery (Loma Linda) - this is another fun place. It's a chain that just opened up in Loma Linda.
Their deep dishes pizzas are great. The best time to go is Happy Hour in the bar--all the mini pizzas are half price and the
appetizers are $2.00 off, so you could stuff yourself without spending more than $10 per person!!!
- Le Basil (Redlands) - this is a Vietnamese and pan asian fusion place that's also great. Our favorite dishes
are spicy noodles (as always!), panang curry and yellow curry.
- Sevilla (Riverside)
- I didn't ever expect a Spanish place to have anything for vegetarians but it turns out that this place has everything to
fill you up. For starters, their bread and aioli will fill you up before you even order. But our favorite tapas are pisto
manchego, batatas a la brava. The vegetarian paella is awesome.
- Spago
(Beverly Hills) - in our quest to see movie stars, we travelled to Wolfgang Puck's star studded Spago, but didn't run into
anyone famous. However, the beautiful restaurant has a number of great vegetarian dishes--mostly pastas and pizzas, but after
having tried their pizza I realized why he is a famous cook and would recommend the place.
- Armando's (Palm Desert) - this is great authentic Mexican food in the heart of El Paseo "The Rodeo Drive of
the Desert." The sopapillas must be good because they had already run out on the Saturday we ate there :(. [Update 3/31/07
- Rima asked the "do you use lard?" question and the answer is yes for EVERYTHING, so sadly this place is off the
list for vegetarians :(]
- Farm Artisan Foods (Redlands) - this
is definitely my favorite place in Redlands. The food is quite flavorful and you feel like your best friend's mother just
made some gourmet food. I especially like the pea and carrot pastry - call ahead to make sure they have it
- India Cook (Irvine) - this is the sister restaurant of India House in Cerritoes and is hands
down the best Punjabi food in the southern california region. Of course, that means lots of butter, lots of cream, and a planned
3 hour siesta after your meal, but hey....that's Indian food, right?
- Garlic
Jo's (Newport Beach) - I'm still discovering the plethora of "garlic" restaurants around here, but definitely stop
by this japanese-american-garlic fusion restaurant with lively entertainment. Try the Italian eggplant, garlic fried rice
and of course.....garlic bread!
- The Bazaar (Beverly Hills) - Jose Andres restaurant
is exceptional and sooo many vegetarian tapas. It's one of the few Spanish restaurants that provides a variety for vegetarians.
- Mom's kitchen - you won't find this in Zagat's, nor in the Yellow
pages....it's my mother's homemade recipes and they blow away all of the above.
About My Vegetarian Guide...
Well, thank you for reading about my vegetarian restaurant guide.
Most of the guides on the web are for vegetarians who are looking for totally and solely vegetarian restaurants, and personally
I dislike those kinds of places. My guide is a guide for vegetarians who don't ask too many questions about how the food
is made (or whether it is made next to meat!), but otherwise desire vegetarian food. Cheese, milk and enzymes are fine with
me. So don't expect a 100 vegetarian choices at any of the above restaurants, but feel free to go and know that you will
be able to get something tasty and enjoyable and your meat eating friends should be okay at the restaurant too!
Have
fun!

Shah's Guide to New Mexico Restaurants 1. El Pinto (ABQ) - Simply put, New
Mexican food at it's best! No wonder Obama, McCain, Clinton, and Bush have all made this a must stop on their political tours
of New Mexico. Skinny enchiladas with green chile is my pick. 2.
Cafe Pasqual's (Santa Fe) - Hard to describe but worth a trip to this Santa Fe chef owned cafe. 3. Frontier (ABQ) - A University of New Mexico hangout popular with students, faculty, and just about everyone
else living in New Mexico. Breakfast burritos minus meat are the best 4. Bumble
Bee's Cafe (ABQ) - I have to list this place simply because of one vegetarian food item - the Burrito de Tomas which has rice
avocado and grilled asparagus - that's right - grilled asparagus!! And somehow it does work...
5. The Grove - Definitely a lunch time winner with a great vegetarian sandwhich and vegetarian
soups. The homemade english muffin with raspberry jam is the item that keeps me coming back for more! 6.
Fuego - this Santa Fe restaurant is veggie friendly - the most amazing quinoa cakes I've had not to mention the spanish garlic
soup - get the Scope ready!! Shah's Guide to Chain
Restaurants
- Buca Di
Beppo--again, this is a fun Italian restaurant chain with monsterous proportions and lots of garlic!!! We love the Eggplant
parmigiana the most...
- Carraba's- I think we go here mostly for the bread
and the wonderful olive oil laden spices they start you with. Those herbs taste so good with bread!! Anyway, the Eggplant
parmigiana took me a little bit to get used to here because it is a more bitter tasting than most places, but now I absolutely
love it!!
- Panera Bread--probably my favorite sandwhich shop chain this
place has fresh vegetarian sandwhiches galore. It's a must try lunch spot.
- Pizzeria
Uno--I haven't been to Chicago for pizza yet, but this place has the same kind of Chicago style deep dish pizza. For the adventerous,
I would recommend putting some of their house red wine vinagrette on top of your pizza--it tastes great!! Of course, Rima
hates doing that!
- Spaghetti Warehouse-- This was my favorite Italian restaurant
in Syracuse. They have all the old world Italy photos like Buca, but it's a much bigger place and the one in Syracuse had
a trolley in middle of the restaurant with tables inside. The sourdough bread they give you with whipped margarine is awesome--I'd
end up eating at least 3 or 4 loaves by the time we left!!! The philly location is great too.
- Papa John's Pizza--we love their thin and crispy pizza, for whatever it is worth!
- In-N-Out Burger- No wonder McDonald's doesn't do well in Southern California--In and Out is a local
burger perfection. For us vegetarians, they make a wonderful grilled cheese sandwhich with their own thousand island type
dressing, fresh lettuce, tomatoes and onions. They pride themselves on the freshness of the food.
- Chipotle--we love the hardshell tacos here. Get the black beans--they are the only vegetarian beans
they have. They load up the tacos with rice, lettuce, tomatoes, sauteed green peppers and onions, guacamole, sour cream, cheese,
sauce.
- California Pizza Kitchen (CPK) -- go figure it took me until I moved to California
to discover the great pizzas at this national chain. We especially like the greek pizza and the pear and gorgonzola - the
last sounds like an odd combination, but trust me it's good!
- Romano's Macaroni
Grill-- A few years ago this was not vegetarian friendly but a few menu changes have really improved our choices.
I especially like the Eggplant parmesan (big surprise, right?). Save room for the desert ravioli - 3 decadent ravioli
filled with chocolate and smothered with more chocolate.
- El Torito
- although there's a plethora of good mexican in the southern california region, this chain mexican seems to do it right.
The burritos, chimichangas, enchiladas can all be made with the vegetarian frijoles de la olla.
- Souplantation - My favorite post surgery lunch spot. This place has a HUGE salad bar, at least 2-3
vegetarian soups, pasta and fresh baked bed every 15 minutes. Use your AAA card for a discount.
- Daphne's Greek - I've recently given this popular southern california chain of greek restaurants a 2nd look
at I think it is reasonable greek food (not the best, but reasonable). The vegetarian combo gives you a generous amount of
food for $9: grape leaves, rice, hummus, tzatzki, falafel patties, pita bread, and my favorite spanakopita. The spanakopita
is a bit oily because of their "flash frying" process.
Shah's Guide to Las Vegas Restaurants 1. Sirio's (Aria Hotel) - a delicious Italian restaurant vegetarian friendly
with excellent eggplant parmesean, tomato soup, and potato gnocchi.
2. Jullian Serrano (Aria Hotel) - a Spanish tapas restaurant with a separate
Vegetarian section? Yes, it's true. Try the poquillo peppers, the potatoes a la brava and the spinach.

Shah's Guide to Restaurants Around the Globe AHMEDABAD, INDIA
- Sankalp (CG Road) - our favorite South Indian place in the city. The dosas are huge and they give
you a delicious sambar/chutney/garlic chutney combination to go with it. They have locations all over Ahmedabad, but I love
the one on C.G. Road which sits at the top of one of the towering markets, with a great view of the city.
- Uncle Sam's Pizza (CG Road) - better than any pizza we've tried in
the USA!!!! Their lunch time salad bar and buffet is reason alone to wait in their always long line. The same group that owns
Sankalp owns this place, and the quality shows. Their garlic bread tastes very similar to Pizza Hut's back in the USA.
- Bavarchi (CG Road) - awesome Punjabi food. The waiters
here are practically down your throat, though. The place is really nice and the quality of food is excellent.
- Havmor (Stadium Road) - Ahmedabad's finest Punjabi restaurant. They also
happen to be the most famous Ice Cream place in Ahmedabad with flavors and taste much better than you will ever find in the
USA. Hopefully you will be able to catch one of their monthly cuisine celebrations - I've been there for their sizzler
festival, punjabi festival and chinese festival.
- Waah!
(Navrangpura Municipal Market) - this place has the best veggie burgers I've ever tried--spicey and delicious! It's
a fun open aired hang out.
- McDonald's (City
Gold Ashram Road) - we don't like McDonald's in the USA, but absolutely crave it in India because the menu is totally
pro vegetarian. The pizza McPuff is Rima's favorite, but any of their veggie burgers are great too and have that spicey
taste locals love. City Gold is a fun place with other restaurants and a great movie theater.
- Rasna restaurant - can't give you the personal recommendation, but Rima swears by the food which
is standard Punjabi. It's located in Maninagar.
- Inder
Residency - Ahmedabad's finest hotel (and only 5 star) has a plethora of choices, but is most notable for their breakfast
and late night fair. I'm still savoring the pineapple macaroni we had there.
- Manekchowk - this is THE place to go for kulfi. Don't ask how hygienic it is, don't ask what
their ingredients are. Just eat it. There are multiple restaurants in the area (Manek chowk is the general area).
NEW DEHLI, INDIA
- Boukara (Maurya Sheraton) - this place is probably reason enough to go to New Dehli. Get ready
for an Indian dining experience that is totally unique. The restaurant must have over 10 tandoors and everything on the menu
is made in the tandoor. It's the only time (other than Dawat in NYC) that I've had tandoori vegetables--cauliflower,
potatoes, etc cooked with spices in the tandoor and it's unbelievably good. Apparently when President Clinton came to
India, he and his family ate here twice because they loved the food so much.
CALCUTTA, INDIA
1. Amber - Calcutta's long standing (more than 40 years)
restaurant continues to be the best in the city.So good is the food that when the Taj
group went to open the Taj Bengal in Calcutta, they apparently tried to steal the chef,
but to no avail.
TORONTO, CANADA
- Ouzeri (Greektown) - this is where I fell in love with greek food. Canadians are much more into vegetarian
food than Americans, and this place has all the traditional Greek dishes as well as the famous Vegetarian Moussaka which is
something you MUST HAVE!!! It's beschamel sauce over sauteed eggplant and potatoes in layers and it's delicious!!!
- Avli
(Greektown) - great vege moussaka and a less-greasy-than-normal spanakopita not made with phyllo dough, but just regular dough.
- Saarvana
Bhavan - hands down the best South Indian food I've had in years. The red chutney goes especially well and the rasam....oh
the rasam....!
- Bombay Chopsticks - one of many "Hakka" Chinese restaurants in Toronto which serve Indian
style Chinese food (somewhat different from Cantonese). Satisfied my craving for vegetable manchurian and Rima's desire
for American chop-suey.
- Athens Pastries - On the day I visited, about 12 people were lined up to buy loukoumades
(greek gulab jamun) and my all time favorite spanakopita. The spanakopita was coming out of the oven fresh every 10 minutes
and was phenomenonal (not too cheesy, not greasy). It's right on Danforth.
- Brar's - This is the most expansive
vegetarian punjabi smorgasbord I have ever seen - a buffet style restaurant with punjabi food, chinese food, gujarati chaat,
salad bar, desserts. And the best part is it's all fresh food - the crowds here are huge.
TIJUANA, MEXICO
- Cien Anos (Tijuana, Mexico) - well, this isn't Southern California, but we LOVE this place
which is known to be the BEST overall restaurant in Tijuana. Anyway, the day we went they start by bringing out this amazing
bean dip with your chips. They had a nice vegetarian soup as well. I can't remember our main dish's name, but rest
assured it was awesome. It's worth crossing the border for this place
